Types of Payments and Transfers

We have two available options for you to choose from when transferring money from your PTSB account.

  1. SEPA (Single Euro Payment Area): Euro Payments within the European Economic Area (EEA).
  2. SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication): Payments outside the EEA and Foreign Currency Payments.

1. SEPA: Euro Payments within the European Economic Area (EEA)

If you are looking to send money between banks in Euro, and within the European Economic Area (EEA), this is done through the SEPA network. It is the same as making a payment between banks within Ireland.

How it works

  • For payments being processed via the SEPA network, no payment charges will be applied by PTSB. However, the receiving bank may apply a charge against the recipient on the receipt of the payment.
  • SEPA Payments are actioned following the instructions being received by PTSB by 4pm on a business day. All payments will be with the receiving bank on the following day.

How do I make a payment less than €10,000 and within the EEA?

SEPA payments for less than €10,000 can be made through the PTSB App or through Open24 Online Banking

Alternatively, you can make a SEPA payment over the phone with one of our advisors by contacting us on 0818 50 24 24 or +353 1 212 4101 (from overseas). Lines are open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays).

Important information

Payments over €10,000 and outside of the EEA will need to be completed by:

  1. Filling out our payment form and,
  2. Attending one of our branches.

Please refer to our guide on how to make international transfers or payments over €10,000.

2. SWIFT: International payments for outside the EEA and Foreign Currency Payments

If you are looking to send money internationally (outside of the EEA) this is known as a SWIFT payment. Foreign Currency or Euro Payments to a non-EEA country are classed as a ‘Currency Payment’ and are processed via the SWIFT Network.

  • For foreign currency payments: You will need to attend your branch for processing.
  • For Euro payments: You can complete our online payment form

How it works

For payments being processed via the SWIFT network, PTSB will send payments known as a 'SHARE' transfer fee type, also referred to as 'SHA'.

This means that any international transfer fees are shared between the sender and receiver. The sender pays the costs to send money through the bank, while the receiver deals with any charges to collect the funds.
